Chennai – In what could be widely seen as a populist election eve welfare measure, the AIADMK government in TN on Friday announced waiver of Rs 12,110 crore farm loans availed by 16.43 lakh farmers from cooperative banks.
The announcement was made by the Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisami on the floor of the state assembly a little while ago. The scheme would come into effect forthwith, and the needy financial allocation for the same was being made, the CM eloberated. He said that the AIADMK was the only party that fulfills promises and also comes up with fresh welfare measures.
Interestingly, this waiver is a part of the poll promise made by the leader of the opposition and DMK president, M K Stalin. DMK circles expressed in private that they did not expect the ADMK government to act so soon, and sort of precipitate their leaders move, scoring a pre-poll point.
It will now be interesting to see what all is promised in the election manifestos of the different lead parties in the state’s electoral fray.
